Deep tawny colour, good structure, intense dried fruit and raisined nose with power and complexity on the palate. Sweet ripe fruit, perfect balance and a long finish.
Krohn are a small family-owned Port house run by brother and sister Jose and Iolanda Carneiro. Long renowned for the quality of their sublime Colheitas (single vintage tawnies), they produce a remarkably complete range for a small house and each wine excels in its category. The Quinta do Retiro Novo estate in Sarzedinho, in the Rio Torto valley, is all A grade vineyard. Vinification takes place here, with some of the top wines still being trodden by foot. All the wines are matured in cellars at Villa Nova de Gaia.
The traditional grape varieties are sourced from the Upper Corgo area of the Douro demarcated region, which is situated in northern Portugal comprising the Douro Valley and its tributaries. Here old vines are planted in schistous soils.
Vinified in closed fermentation tanks, fermentation stopped with the addition of grape brandy in order to retain a level of natural sweetness (101g/l). Maturation is in oak vats in the Wiese & Krohn cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia, on the Atlantic coast. Wines are bottled without fining and to order, maximising the time spent in barrel.
Serve after a meal with pudding (bread pudding with raspberry sauce, tea pudding with cinnamon and lemon sticks), tarts or cakes (made of almonds, chestnuts, chocolate, red fruits)
"Ruby colour showing little evolution. Resinous aromas, raisins, dried plum and some other dried fruits. Full and soft in the mouth, full body and good structure with a balanced acidity and complexity, young and old at the same time, but powerful, with a long finish and a "fighting" character. 17,5/20" (Revista de Vinhos, Dec 2002).
Silver Medal (Challenge International du Vin 2003, Bourg, France).

"Very dark in colour, intense aroma, with coffee, chocolate and raisins, and an immense structure and powerful finish. Fat and full on the palate, with notes of dried fruit. This traditional style was met with great enthusiasm from the tasting panel.
18 / 20 points (Revista de Vinhos, Lisbon, June 2002)
