Deep and intense tawny colour for its age with an amber-brown rim. Powerful, racy nose with very complex aromas of brown spices, violet perfume, and balsamic. Lively, full and unctuous with long pecan nut and toffee finish, but well balanced in acidity, sweetness, and alcohol.
Krohn are a small family-owned Port house run by brother and sister Jose and Iolanda Carneiro. Long renowned for the quality of their sublime Colheitas (single vintage tawnies), they produce a remarkably complete range for a small house and each wine excels in its category. The Quinta do Retiro Novo estate in Sarzedinho, in the Rio Torto valley, is all A grade vineyard. Vinification takes place here, with some of the top wines still being trodden by foot. All the wines are matured in cellars at Villa Nova de Gaia.
The traditional grape varieties are sourced from the Upper Corgo area of the Douro demarcated region, which is situated in northern Portugal comprising the Douro Valley and its tributaries. Here old vines are planted in schistous soils.
Fermentation in open granite tanks called 'lagares', where the grapes are trodden by foot. Fermentation is interrupted by the addition of grape spirit to preserve a certain degree of natural sweetness. All ageing is done in 547 litre oak barrels (the traditional 'pipe') and larger casks. Bottled to order.
