A deliciously sweet, nutty, wine brimming with freshly cracked walnuts and pecans, the fruit being reminiscent of caramelised figs, and layers of woody, brown spices. All flavours are in total harmony, the sweetness perfectly balanced with good acidity, for a long lasting finish.
Krohn are a small family-owned Port house run by brother and sister Jose and Iolanda Carneiro. Long renowned for the quality of their sublime Colheitas (single vintage tawnies), they produce a remarkably complete range for a small house and each wine excels in its category. The Quinta do Retiro Novo estate in Sarzedinho, in the Rio Torto valley, is all A grade vineyard. Vinification takes place here, with some of the top wines still being trodden by foot. All the wines are matured in cellars at Villa Nova de Gaia.
The traditional grape varieties are sourced from the Upper Corgo area of the Douro demarcated region, which is situated in northern Portugal comprising the Douro Valley and its tributaries. Here old vines are planted in schistous soils.
Fermentation in open granite tanks called 'lagares', where the grapes are trodden by foot. Fermentation is interrupted by the addition of grape spirit to preserve a certain degree of natural sweetness. All ageing is done in 547 litre oak barrels (the traditional 'pipe') and larger casks. Bottled to order.
The vintage started with an extremely cold winter, a late and scarce flowering followed by a hot summer with good picking conditions.
Decanter world wine awards 2007, Bronze medal
IWC 2005, Gold medal
