Very dark in colour, intense aroma, with coffee, chocolate and raisins, and an immense structure and powerful finish. Fat and full on the palate, with notes of dried fruit.
Krohn are a small family-owned Port house run by brother and sister Jose and Iolanda Carneiro. Long renowned for the quality of their sublime Colheitas (single vintage tawnies), they produce a remarkably complete range for a small house and each wine excels in its category. The Quinta do Retiro Novo estate in Sarzedinho, in the Rio Torto valley, is all A grade vineyard. Vinification takes place here, with some of the top wines still being trodden by foot. All the wines are matured in cellars at Villa Nova de Gaia.
The traditional grape varieties are sourced from the Upper Corgo area of the Douro demarcated region, which is situated in northern Portugal comprising the Douro Valley and its tributaries. Here old vines are planted in schistous soils.
Fermentation in open granite tanks called 'lagares', where the grapes are trodden by foot. Fermentation is interrupted by the addition of grape spirit to preserve a certain degree of natural sweetness. All ageing is done in 547 litre oak barrels (the traditional 'pipe') and larger casks. Bottled to order.
Drink at cool room temperature (or even lightly chilled in the summer) after a meal with nuts, tarts and cakes made of almonds, chestnuts, chocolate or red fruits; crème brulé and cheese - creamy cheeses like Brie, Camembert, Brillat-Savarin from France, or Bel Paese and Moscarpone from Italy.
Wine Magazine - Tawny Port Tasting - December 2002 - 89 /100 points
'Hugely concentrated, intense, multi-layered, complex wine. Extract and length in abudance. Quite overwhelming.'
'Luscious flavours, sweet plums, power and spice.'
'Great smell of good oak. An acquired taste but has class.'
Silver Medal - IWC 2003
